Senior designer hired

Client :

A mobile games studio in India

Engagement Period:

Autumn 2024

This studio decided to invest seriously in user experience, and concluded that the right move was one outstanding senior hire rather than a larger team of generalists. That is a considered decision and a harder one to execute, because it means the appointment has to be right.

It also means the bar sits where it should: high. Over that autumn a number of strong designers went through the process without an offer being made, and several withdrew for reasons that had nothing to do with the role , one had a family member taken ill, another decided to stay put. Senior design searches run this way. The market is competitive and good people have options.

Our contribution was to keep the client's picture accurate throughout. When a candidate's family emergency meant he needed time, we explained the situation so his silence would not be misread. When another became unreachable, we said we had tried repeatedly and believed he had moved on, rather than leaving a name in the tracker suggesting momentum that was not there. When a scheduling error was ours, we said so plainly and fixed it.

Meanwhile we had submitted a UI/UX designer on the 2nd. The next day we came back with context: she was available immediately, and she was specifically looking for a senior title, so the conversation would land better framed that way.

Intro call on the 7th. Assignment the same day. Submitted on the 8th. She had joined by the 22nd , and she was someone the studio was genuinely pleased with, which was the entire point.

"Hiring one person to raise a standard is harder than hiring five to add capacity. The tolerance for 'nearly right' is zero."
